The Rich Man

10:17 Now as Jesus was starting out on his way, someone ran up to him, fell on his knees, and said, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 10:18 Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. 10:19You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, do not defraud, honor your father and mother.’” 10:20 The man said to him, “Teacher, I have wholeheartedly obeyed all these lawssince my youth.” 10:21 As Jesus looked at him, he felt love for him and said, “You lack one thing. Go, sell whatever you have and give the money 10  to the poor, and you will have treasure 11  in heaven. Then come, follow me.” 10:22 But at this statement, the man 12  looked sad and went away sorrowful, for he was very rich. 13

10:23 Then 14  Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!” 10:24 The disciples were astonished at these words. But again Jesus said to them, 15  “Children, how hard it is 16  to enter the kingdom of God! 10:25 It is easier for a camel 17  to go through the eye of a needle 18  than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” 10:26 They were even more astonished and said 19  to one another, “Then 20  who can be saved?” 21  10:27 Jesus looked at them and replied, “This is impossible for mere humans, 22  but not for God; all things are possible for God.”

10:28 Peter began to speak to him, “Look, 23  we have left everything to follow you!” 24  10:29 Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, 25  there is no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for my sake and for the sake of the gospel 10:30 who will not receive in this age 26  a hundred times as much – homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, fields, all with persecutions 27  – and in the age to come, eternal life. 28

Still I Rise

You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I'll rise.

Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
'Cause I walk like I've got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.

Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I'll rise.

Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops.
Weakened by my soulful cries.

Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don't you take it awful hard
'Cause I laugh like I've got gold mines
Diggin' in my own back yard.

You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I'll rise.

Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I've got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?

Out of the huts of history's shame
I rise
Up from a past that's rooted in pain
I rise
I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.
Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that's wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise.

It’s The Little Things

It really is the little things that make a home festive. We don't have much, but the little decorations we do have spread around the house are contributing to the festive atmosphere. That along with our nightly Advent devotions and prayers with Hubs, our Advent calendar and lighting of the Advent wreath is really keeping us focused on the meaning of this season.

What’s happening in my home?…

In my kitchen… I am trying to remember to stir my Amish Friendship Starter. It's starting to stink something bad, so I guess I am on the right track. If I succeed at this it will give me the courage to tackle the sourdough starter again.

With our marriage… Taking it day by day.

With the children… reminding myself that they will grow up so fast, and that I need to spend more time enjoying them and less time fussing.

Around the homestead… Snow everywhere, getting ready for another storm. Thankful that while we may not have much we always have enough.

In my “Inner Man” (2 Cor. 4:16)… My heart is bursting with the joy of knowing that God really does hear my prayers. I have been needlessly worrying about situation that I had given to God and taken back. Forgetting that God will supply all my needs…

Running a day late with this post.

Amish Friendship Bread

I am on day five of my Amish friendship bread. A couple of days ago a co-worker of my Hubs was kind enough to send him home with a bag of starter and these instructions. Since I have no one to pass the bags to, I thought I would share the recipe.

Amish Friendship Bread Starter

This is the Amish Friendship Bread Starter Recipe that you"ll need to make the Amish Friendship Bread (above). It is very important to use plastic or wooden utensils and plastic or glass containers when making this. Do not use metal at all!

Ingredients:

1 pkg. active dry yeast
1/4 cup warm water (110°F)
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup white sugar
1 cup warm milk (110°F)

Directions:

1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water for about 10 minutes. Stir well.

2. In a 2 quart glass or plastic container, combine 1 cup sifted flour and 1 cup sugar. Mix thoroughly or the flour will get lumpy when you add the milk.

3. Slowly stir in warm milk and dissolved yeast mixture. Loosely cover the mixture with a lid or plastic wrap. The mixture will get bubbly. Consider this Day 1 of the cycle, or the day you receive the starter.

For the next 10 days handle starter according to the instructions below .

Amish Friendship Bread

day 1 – Do nothing with the starter

days 2-5:
Stir with a wooden spoon.

day 6 – Add 1 cup each flour, sugar and milk.

days 7-9:
Stir with a wooden spoon.

day 10 – Add 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar and 1 cup milk. Divide into 4 containers, with 1 cup each for three of your friends and 1 cup for your own loaves. Give friends the instructions for Day 1 through Day 10 and the following recipe for baking the bread.

After removing the 3 cups of batter, combine the remaining cup of  starter with the following ingredients in a large bowl:

2/3 cup oil
3 eggs
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
1 to 1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1 cup sugar
2 cups flour
1 1/4 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda

Using a fork beat by hand until well blended. You can add 1 cup raisins and 1 cup nuts (optional).

Grease two loaf pans with butter, sprinkle with sugar instead of flour.

Bake at 325 degrees F for 45 minutes to 1 hour . Cool 10 minutes, remove from pans. Makes two loaves of bread.

Moms Who Think has a similar recipe.

Morning Prayer

Father,
you prepared the Virgin Mary
to be the worthy mother of your Son.
You let her share beforehand
in the salvation Christ
would bring by his death,
and kept her sinless
from the first moment of her conception.
Help us by her prayers
to live in your presence without sin.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God for ever and ever. Amen

What’s happening in my home?

In the kitchen…. I am learning how to incorporate vegan recipes into our menu in preparation for more fasting  in the future.

With our marriage… I am realizing that just because your married doesn't mean you will suddenly see eye to eye on everything, and that it's okay to have differences after all we are two different people.

With the children… They are growing in faith and it's a wonderful thing to witness.

Around the homestead…Still working on mini projects around the house, the yard has green spots!!

In my inner man… I've felt a great sense of relief ever since I came to some decisions, but daily I wonder if this is where my journey ends. I hear the East and Rome beckoning more and more.

Pondering On

4:8 Formerly when you did not know God, you were enslaved to beings that by nature are not gods at all. 13 4:9 But now that you have come to know God (or rather to be known by God), how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless 14 basic forces? 15 Do you want to be enslaved to them all over again? 16 4:10 You are observing religious 17 days and months and seasons and years. 4:11 I fear for you that my work for you may have been in vain. 4:12 I beg you, brothers and sisters, 18 become like me, because I have become like you. You have done me no wrong!

Confession

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen.

General Thanksgiving

Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen.

ANIMA CHRISTI

Soul of Christ, sanctify me.
Body of Christ, save me;
Blood of Christ, inebriate me;
Water from the side of Christ, wash me;
Passion of Christ, strengthen me;
O good Jesu, hear me;
Within thy wounds hide me;
Suffer me not to be separated from thee;
From the malicious enemy defend me;
In the hour of my death call me,
And bid me come to thee.
That with thy Saints I may praise thee
For ever and ever. Amen.
